The Doctoral Thesis, entitled “Image, artist and illness”, aims to explore the relationship between art - as a creative process - and illness: an important, and even crucial, factor in the shaping of the image and of the artist’s personality. As a starting point, we analyse in depth the concept of the “legend of the artist” as well as the social consideration of the artist´s image from Ancient Greece to the modern era. Once we have established the characteristics that have shaped this concept and the role that the artist´s image has played in society throughout history, we examine at length the notion of disease as an integral characteristic of the “legend of the artist” and its important role in the development of creativity. We also analyse the importance of “art” and creativity as a therapeutic tool. After studying a considerable number of artists in whom there is a clear relationship between the creative process and disease, the dissertation analyses the lives and works of Frida Kahlo, Joseph Beuys and Antonio Saura as relevant examples of where suffering an illness has had an enormous influence on personal image and output. For that purpose, the biographies of these artists have been used as a principal source for the exploration of their personal and professional careers. A comprehensive selection of images of the artists and of their art works is also included in order to illustrate the different themes discussed in this dissertation
