The Institute of Scientific & Technical Information (INIST, www.inist.fr), founded in '88 and part of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS, www.cnrs.fr), is a major public database producer (Pascal, Francis) and document supply center. Since 1998, INIST has engaged in a collective reflection on its databases, services and acquisition policy to face up with electronic document and rapidly changing needs. Our approach to "non-conventional literature" (reports, theses, conferences) is moving from traditional "paper acquisition" to an integrated service of "knowledge mediation". This evolution modifies role, skills and functioning of INIST information specialists. Some examples and perspectives are presented: inventoring scientific report production (ISRN national agency), collecting reports from French government agencies, organizing and preparing input records for the SIGLE database, providing electronic access to GL produced by French research centres, digitalizing French theses and searching for dissertations in information sciences, dealing with CNRS production, checking for conferences on the Web, consulting. Includes : Conference preprint, Pratt student commentary XA International
