Esta práctica pretende acercar a los estudiantes el proceso de síntesis de cloro (Cl2) e hidróxido sódico (NaOH, sosa caústica), una de las aplicaciones industriales más importantes de la tecnología electroquímica, para que de este modo comprendan mejor las posibilidades de la electroquímica en la industria. Para ello se propone un experimento que simula a escala laboratorio el funcionamiento de una célula de membrana. También es objetivo de esta práctica el familiarizar a los estudiantes con el cálculo de los parámetros de funcionamiento característicos de un proceso de electrolisis industrial.
