New! OpenAIRE's 'Enhanced Publications' Pilots

Background

OpenAIRE Enhanced PublicationOpenAIREplus aims to provide a service which allows users to interact with and support linking between research articles, data and project funding.

This results in information packages for which the term "Enhanced Publication" has been coined.

The project's "Enhanced Publications" pilots serve as a test bed for further development of services in OpenAIREplus.  They allow for a better understanding of researchers' practice (like Research Data Management, use of identifiers, data citation etc.) in different scientific communities and emphasise challenges in collecting of information resources from heterogeneous sources.

The pilots are part of a series of studies investigating key areas for the realization of an Open Access and participatory infrastructure for scholarly communication.

Demonstrators

Pilots focus on research results in the Life Sciences and Social Sciences & Humanities.

In the Life Sciences

Purpose

The demonstrator showcases the enhancement of publications with associated contextual information between OpenAIRE, repositories and biological databases and information services from EBI.

Corpus and Data Sources

Publications from the field of Life Sciences have been identified from an institutional repository. Since they are associated with a PubMed-ID enhancements like datasets, references and citations can be retrieved from services provided by EBI and UKPMC. Related project information (FP7) is fetched from OpenAIRE.

The user can browse by entities like publication, author, dataset and project. Furthermore when signing in as user "jane/default" the user is directed through different steps to enhance a publication with related information resources.

 In the Social Sciences

Purpose

The purpose of this demonstrators is to show the distinction between the regular 'context' of publications and discipline specific fine-grained references to variables in an online database (NESSTAR) hosted by GESIS.

Corpus and Data Sources

The demonstrator is composed using metadata already available at http://www.narcis.nl . The relations to contextual entities are added manually. The domain-specific concepts and variables are available at http://zacat.gesis.org and their relation to EVS publications were defined by the authors using the EPE developed by CenterData http://www.centerdata.nl/en/TopMenu/Wat_doen_we/ICT-toepassingen/dataplusepe.html. Related datasets are available via DANS EASY (http://easy.dans.knaw.nl).

 In the Humanities (Oral History)

Purpose

The purpose of this demonstrator is to show the distinction between the regular 'context' of publications and discipline specific fine-grained references to fragments from the Oral History collection in a data archive (http://easy.dans.knaw.nl).

Corpus and Data Sources

The demonstrator is composed using metadata already available at http://www.narcis.nl . The relations to contextual entities are added manually. Interview-fragments were created using the Oral History Annotation Tool for INTER-VIEWS developed by SPEX http://www.clarin.nl/system/files/Heuvel_Sanders_Rutten_Scagliola_Witkamp_LREC2012.pdf and are hosted at http://www.watveteranenvertellen.nl. The full interviews are available at http://easy.dans.knaw.nl.
