OpenAIRE representatives in Greece and Cyprus continue to organise webinars on Open Science and the European Open Science Cloud - EOSC.

Athena Research Center and the Library of the University of Cyprus invite you to participate in the webinar that takes place on Thursday 4th May 2023 at 11:00 am EEST. The purpose of the webinar is to inform about the ways in which Open Science has been applied in the Greek and Cypriot research ecosystems, emphasizing on the latest developments and upcoming actions. In these efforts, the contribution of National Initiatives has been significant, namely the Hellenic Open Science Initiative (HOSI) and Informal Consultative Group for Open Science in Cyprus.

In 2014 the OpenAPC project was launched at Bielefeld University Library and has received funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) (2015 - 2018), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) (2018 - 2020) and the European Commission through the OpenAIRE Nexus project (2021 - 2023).

In this online event, the presentation focused on the benefits of transparent publication fees and on how institutions can become part of the global acting OpenAPC project.

We briefly discussed the data format and processing, how transparency is applied to all steps of the data lifecycle in OpenAPC, and the benefits of participating.

The presentation closed with a brief outlook.

Finally, time for discussions and further explanations after the presentations.

OpenAIRE in Greece and Cyprus is organizing a series of webinars for the first half of 2023. We invite you to learn about the latest developments, tools and best practices that support the implementation of Open Science in the European and National Research Web and EOSC.

The first webinar takes place on Thursday 30th March 2023 at 11:00 am EEST, and focuses on research assessment processes. The goal is to clarify the concept of assessment in the field of research and to capture the current situation, highlighting the need for reform through the European Commission’s European Research Area policy and initiatives, such as COARA

The reliable and timely monitoring and evaluation of research activities is indispensable for the efficient allocation of resources and the overall decision-making processes for every organisation conducting scholarly research. Built upon the OpenAIRE research graph, the OpenAIRE Monitor Institutional Dashboard, a tailor-made data and visualization service of OpenAIRE allows organizations to get a 360º view of their research outcomes, monitor their Open Science compliance, discover Open Science trends, measure impact, discover trends, connections and collaborations and overall turn data into insights, so as to improve and optimize their future actions. The data from repositories and other content providers, passing through the OpenAIRE Research pipeline to be aggregated, deduplicated, enriched and cleaned, is the steppingstone for providing accurate and timely indicators, and a well-rounded monitoring dashboard.

OpenAIRE EXPLORE is a discovery portal of Open Science scholarly works that is built on top of the OpenAIRE Research Graph.  OpenAIRE embraces the need of open scholarly works mapping with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) classification and the Fields of Science taxonomy. These classifications assist to view contributions of research towards complex challenges for  humanity such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and poverty reduction.

In this workshop you will find out how SciNoBo - the Science No Borders team from our partner, Athena Research Center and its Artificial Intelligence stack - applies advanced Natural Language Processing and Graph Machine Learning technologies to provide  FoS and SDG annotations to enhance the research products of the OpenAIRE Research Graph and how this new knowledge discovery pathway is now available through OpenAIRE EXPLORE.

The OpenAIRE Research Graph (ORG) is an Open Access dataset including metadata about different entities that are part of the research lifecycle, such as publications, dataset, software, RPOs, grants, with links among them. This session will highlight how the information in the ORG can support the calculation of Research and Innovation indicators focusing on the use cases under development in the IntelComp project, where the indicators will allow to get insights from current practices, assess the impact and spot the trends in Science, Technology and Innovation.

This is an informative and educative webinar, where we will present OpenAIRE's UsageCounts, the OpenAIRE service that contributes towards impact evaluation of usage activity in Open Access Content Providers.

UsageCounts gathers raw usage activity and consolidated usage statistics reports respectively, for OpenAIRE Research Graph products and from the network of OpenAIRE content providers (repositories, e-journals, CRIS, national aggregators, etc.). It builds and deploys usage statistics across the above distributed network and provides significant added value for different stakeholders.

The aim of this public webinar was to present the Monitoring Dashboard (https://monitor.openaire.eu/) that allows institutions to track research activities, their performance, and ultimately their impact across key dimensions such as Open Science policy uptake, European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), collaborations, reach and visibility, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and so on.

As part of the OpenAIRE Monitor – an on-demand service, built upon the OpenAIRE Research Graph, with the mission to offer reliable and timely monitoring and evaluation of research activities for different types of organizations - The institutional Dashboard aims to assist institutions to turn data into insights, thus revealing weak spots and hidden potential and leading the way to evidence-based decision making.

This OpenAIRE Webinar aims to present the Open Science Observatory (https://osobservatory.openaire.eu/), a plataform that presents a collection of indicators and visualizations that help interested stakeholders (policy makers and research administrators among others) better understand the Open Science landscape in Europe across countries.

This platform assists the monitoring, and consequently the enhancing, of open science policy uptake across different dimensions of interest, revealing weak spots and hidden potential. Based on the OpenAIRE Research Graph, following open science principles and an evidence-based approach, the indicators can be used to provide timely and reliable insights on the evolution of open science in Europe and assist in promoting good practices.

OpenAIRE and EOSC: interactions and contribution to Open Science

For the third consecutive year, the National Open Access Desks for Greece and Cyprus continue their joint efforts to inform and update the research and academic communities in their countries about important Open Science aspects.

This webinar presented the pan-European electronic infrastructure for Open Science - OpenAIRE and the European Open Science Cloud - EOSC. The webinar was supported also by the NI4OS-Europe project.

Lately, there is a rapid change in the field of Research and Innovation (R&I) in Europe. The adoption of the Open Science model by the European Commission has channelled open standards into national research settings. Complementary to new policies that are created, EOSC is being developed aiming to become the European research web which incorporates good practices and interconnects with national R&I ecosystems by design. Research infrastructures are called to support data-driven research and adapt to the new reality that adds value to their services.

The presentation informed about OpenAIRE, its continuous activity in the European Research Area for more than 10 years now and its evolution into a legal entity based in Greece. It also helped to provide a better understanding of EOSC and its operation, and communicated how OpenAIRE and NI4OS-Europe assist its implementation. In addition, it highlighted the changes brought by EOSC in various R&I areas and explained how everyday activities of researchers will be performed as well as what measures are underway to fully support the research process in all its dimensions.

“COVID-19: best practices, tools and contact points in Greece”


Athena Research Center (ARC), in the context of activities undertaken between OpenAIRE National Open Access Desk, RDA National Node and ELIXIR-GR, organises a new series of informative and educational webinars around COVID-19 research. The digital events are taking place in collaboration with the following scientific institutions: National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, National Center for Research & Technology Hellas, Hellenic Pasteur Institute, Biomedical Sciences Research Center “Alexander Fleming”, Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens, Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas, Hellenic Academic Libraries Link, and the research infrastructure Inspired-RIs.


Τhe new series of digital events follows the first webinar held in April that aimed at collecting and promoting all efforts and knowledge around managing the virus crisis to the Greek scientific and academic community. This time, the purpose focuses, also, on knowledge exchange based on Open Science practices and on training in research data management and software development. Indicative subject areas to be covered are:

Dominique Babini

Dominique Babini is from Argentina, holds a doctorate in political science and a postgraduate degree in information science. Open access and open science advisor, and previously repository developer and manager, at the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), a network of 736 research institutions in 52 countries, where she now coordinates CLACSO's open access/open science International Campaign.

Janneke Adema

Janneke Adema is an Assistant Professor in Digital Media at the Centre for Postdigital Cultures at Coventry University. In her research she explores the future of scholarly communications and experimental forms of knowledge production, where her work incorporates processual and performative publishing, radical open access, scholarly poethics, media studies, book history, cultural studies, and critical theory. She explores these issues in depth in her various publications, but also by supporting a variety of scholar-led, not-for-profit publishing projects, including the Radical Open Access Collective, Open Humanities Press, ScholarLed, and Post Office Press (POP). She is currently Co-PI on the Community-Led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs (COPIM) project (copim.ac.uk). You can follow her research on openreflections.wordpress.com.

Tom Olyhoek

Tom Olyhoek has been living and working  in Africa during many years. Since 2012 he is advocating open access and open science as Open Access working group coordinator for Open Knowledge International. In 2013 he became a member of the (DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) advisory board who were instrumental in redefining the criteria for being indexed in DOAJ. Since 2014 he is Editor in Chief at the DOAJ. From jan 2018 his main task has been the managing of the global DOAJ ambassador program and global outreach activities including connecting to other open
communities like the Creative Commons Global Network and OCSD Net. From 2019-2021 the program has a special focus on Africa. He is also a member of Force11 where he teaches at the yearly Force11 Summer School on the topic of how to evaluate scientific quality for journals, articles and individual scholars His current research interests are, copyright and licensing in open access publishing, development of new ways to assess the quality of scholars and scholarly works and follow research in the area of soil microbiology in relation to soil health and human health (microbiome research).
