Mission
The UPM University Library’s mission is to facilitate access to and the dissemination of research results (including data, software, models, etc.); to enable citizens to access scientific evidence and both digital and non-digital information resources; to collaborate in knowledge co-creation processes; and to deliver the training needed to promote the dissemination of open science within the university community and wider society.
Contribution to Open Science
The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) began its path toward Open Access with the signing of the Berlin Declaration in 2006. In 2007, it launched its institutional repository, the Archivo Digital UPM. The UPM Open Access Policy, approved by the UPM Governing Council in October 2010, aims to ensure access, visibility, impact, and long-term preservation of UPM’s academic and research output. The implementation of the UPM´s Policy on open access to publications and related initiatives, have been carried out by the UPM Library, with the goal of increasing the visibility and recognition of the scientific and academic production of faculty members, researchers, and the university as a whole.
Within the framework of the Madroño Consortium, which brings together the libraries of Madrid’s public universities and UNED, the Declaration in Support of Open Science and Access to Academic and Scientific Information was signed in December 2017. It aims to promote the adoption of measures that facilitate universities’ transition towards the paradigm of Open Access to Knowledge, within their respective capacities and areas of responsibility. UPM is also a member of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA).
There is a UPM Open Science community that provides support and training for researchers. It also works to support the definition of procedures and methodologies for a better use of Open Science tools at different levels and represents UPM in the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Association.

Services
To comply with the requirements of the UPM Open Access Policy and the Madroño Consortium Declaration in Support of Open Science, several digital publishing platforms have been developed:
- Institutional repository Archivo Digital UPM (http://oa.upm.es/): The repository stores in digital format the academic and scientific documentation (theses, articles, etc...) produced at the institution and makes it openly accessible, following the principles of the Budapest Open Access Initiative and the Berlin Declaration. The repository is aligned with other regional and national repositories (Recolecta), European infrastructures (OpenAIRE), and international standards. It uses Dublin Core metadata, the OAI PMH protocol, and Creative Commons open-access licences.
- e cienciaDatos platform (https://edatos.consorciomadrono.es/): A platform for archiving open research data produced at UPM. Each dataset is assigned a DOI and a permanent URI and has an established preservation plan. The service holds CoreTrustSeal certification.
- Tool PGDonline (https://pgd.consorciomadrono.es): An open platform based on OpenAIRE’s Argos tool, adapted to support researchers in creating and managing Data Management Plans (DMPs) according to different national and regional funders’ requirements. It provides templates in Spanish aligned with Horizon Europe requirements and enables DMP management throughout the full project lifecycle.
- Archivo Histórico Digital de la Biblioteca – AHDB (https://ahdb.upm.es): A platform for the dissemination of archived materials and historical objects collected throughout the university’s history. In addition to supporting teaching and research, the AHDB aims to make this valuable documentation accessible to society.
- UPM Open Educational Resources Portal (REA) (https://rea.upm.es/es/): A platform that gathers digital educational resources produced at UPM that have a significant impact on learning and makes them publicly available. It also aims to promote the open dissemination of innovative teaching practices, strengthen educational innovation networks, and foster faculty training in digital skills and open culture.
