Towards Next-Gen Citation Indexes: The Groundbreaking Release of OpenAIRE ScholeXplorer API 3.0!
We are thrilled to unveil the latest version of ScholeXplorer, a game-changer in scholarly communication!
ScholeXplorer is the citation hub of the OpenAIRE Graph, aggregating, harmonizing, and providing programmatic access to metadata on citation links between publications, research data, and research software. It collects data from trusted sources and enriches it with AI-driven full-text mining, making it a powerful tool for tracking scholarly impact.
The World’s First Extensive Citation Index API
The highlight of this release is the OpenAIRE ScholeXplorer API 3.0, the first-ever endpoint worldwide to offer an extensive citation index, featuring:
~428Mi unique identifiers for precise citation tracking.
Coverage of all publication-publication citations available in the open ecosystem.
Inclusion of publication-data and publication-software citations, offering an unprecedented view of research connections.
This vast dataset is built from 1600+ trusted sources, including:
- Crossref, OpenCitations, DataCite
- Institutional, thematic, and catch-all repositories
- Aggregators and domain-specific data sources
AI-Powered Citation Discovery
Beyond aggregating existing citations, ScholeXplorer goes further, by integrating citations inferred through AI-driven full-text mining. ~65 million PDFs (and growing) have been analysed by the OpenAIRE Graph, extracting references and in-text mentions to uncover hidden citation links.
Why does this matter? These inferred citations:
- Enrich the global citation network by identifying previously untracked connections
- Strengthen the Open Science ecosystem by feeding directly into OpenCitations.net and DataCite Corpus
- Enhance research impact assessment by providing deeper insights into how research outputs influence each other
A New Era for Scholarly Discoverability & Research Assessment
With this release, ScholeXplorer revolutionizes citation tracking by:
- Bridging the gap between scientific literature, datasets, and software
- Expanding the reach of citations for researchers, institutions, and policymakers
- Enabling a more comprehensive approach to research impact and scholarly assessment
"This new release elevates the scholarly communication landscape by offering, for the first time, access to a comprehensive and unprecedented citation index that includes all available citations between publications, research data, and research software." Paolo Manghi, OpenAIRE CTO
