Universiteit Utrecht

Mission

Utrecht University's ambition is to contribute to a better world through high-quality education and research. The social challenges we face can only be solved by working together. Thanks to the wide range of disciplines that Utrecht University has at its disposal, it is ideally equipped to initiate necessary transformations.

We regard scientific knowledge as a public good and a universal right. Open Science is based on the public values of equality, justice, diversity, and transparency. These values are reflected in the sharing of knowledge and research results and in a transparent and participatory research process. Sharing knowledge with colleagues and with society is central to what we do and think. We actively seek connection and meaningful collaboration inside and outside the university. We actively contribute to the transition to an open academic world. We do this by participating in national and international networks and by focusing on a sustainable, open knowledge infrastructure.

Contribution to Open Science

In 2017, Utrecht University started a programme to make open science the default at our institution. Open Science at our university is centered around five tracks: open access, fair data and software, public engagement, recognition and rewards and open education.
Utrecht University has a new vision on recognition and rewards that is well aligned with open science. Utrecht University has also signed (and actively contributes to) the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information.
