Unlocking Innovation at EUDAT 2024: OpenAIRE’s Contributions to Advancing Open Science

Jan 15, 2025

The festive ambiance of Karlsruhe's Christmas markets provided a warm backdrop for a landmark event in research data management: The  EUDAT Conference 2024, held from December 3-5 at the ZKM Karlsruhe (Center for Art and Media). Bringing together over 100 experts and stakeholders, the conference offered an engaging platform for showcasing innovations, exchanging ideas, and fostering collaborations to shape the future of research data management and open science.

OpenAIRE, with its pivotal role in the  EOSC Beyondproject, was at the forefront of this transformative event. From presentations and posters to workshops and an inviting booth, OpenAIRE’s presence underscored its commitment to enhancing the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and making Open Science a reality.

The EOSC Core Innovation Sandbox: A Glimpse into the Future

One of the conference’s highlights was the focus on the EOSC Beyond project, which OpenAIRE is participating in. The  EOSC Core Innovation Sandbox, an innovative space for experimentation and collaboration within the EOSC ecosystem, was presented. The sandbox is designed to empower researchers, developers, and service providers to test, validate, and advance services that align with FAIR principles, fostering interoperability and innovation across the research data lifecycle.

This initiative, set to open for external providers in March 2025, signals a significant leap forward in equipping the research community with tools to design and refine advanced services within the EOSC Federation.

In addition to the presentation, Maja Dolinar showcased a poster on the EOSC Core Innovation Sandbox at the conference exhibition. The poster sparked engaging discussions with attendees, further promoting the Sandbox’s vision and benefits.

Synergy in Action: Collaboration between EOSC Beyond and FAIRCORE4EOSC projects

The conference’s dedication to collaboration was evident during the joint workshop of EOSC Beyond and FAIRCORE4EOSC projects. This session brought together more than 20 partners to explore how the ten FAIRCORE4EOSC services align with the EOSC Innovation Sandbox, driving interoperability and advancing FAIR principles. Together, these projects are laying the groundwork for a robust EOSC ecosystem, with continuous collaboration planned through 2025.

Spotlight on OpenAIRE’s RDGraph and SCILake

OpenAIRE’s contributions extended beyond the EOSC Core Innovation Sandbox. Thanasis Vergoulis presented the RDGraph, an innovative tool designed to enhance research data findability and accessibility. Meanwhile, the SCILake project, developed by Thanasis Vergoulis and Stefania Amodeo, showcased the cutting-edge potential of OpenAIRE’s data solutions.

Strengthening the Ecosystem: Panel Discussions and Booth Engagement

OpenAIRE’s  Elli Papadopoullou  brought valuable insights to the eInfra Assembly Session, where representatives from leading e-infrastructures discussed strategies to improve service interoperability and align national infrastructures with EOSC. The interactive session fostered a “mind-the-gap” dialogue between service providers and scientific communities, addressing challenges and identifying opportunities for collaboration.

OpenAIRE’s booth, a vibrant hub of activity throughout the conference, welcomed participants eager to learn more about OpenAIRE’s services and collaboration possibilities. The enthusiastic response from attendees highlighted the growing recognition of OpenAIRE’s role in driving the open science agenda.

A Collective Vision for Open Science

The EUDAT Conference 2024 underscored the collective spirit of the research data community, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility in advancing open science. For OpenAIRE, the event was an opportunity to connect with stakeholders, showcase progress, and reaffirm its commitment to a FAIR and open research landscape.

As we look ahead, OpenAIRE remains steadfast in its mission to support the EOSC vision, foster innovation, and build a sustainable and inclusive research data ecosystem. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to make strides in the EOSC Beyond project and beyond!

Thank you to all who joined us in Karlsruhe—whether at our presentations, workshops, or booth. Together, we are shaping the future of Open Science!
